Winter brings short days and, that’s right, the EL department poetry contest.

This year’s theme is Put A Sonnet On It.

First place will win a $50 certificate to Atticus books in downtown Spokane. Second place will win a $20 certificate to Atticus.

Submit sonnets to the EL front desk by Friday, Jan. 25, 2013 at 5 p.m. Entries should not include students’ names (attach a separate sheet with name, title of poem, and contact info).

The contest is open to all Whitworth students. Multiple entries permitted. There’s no entry fee.

This year’s judge is Jenny Brown (pictured above). Dr. Brown teaches French in Whitworth’s Modern Languages Department. She reads while cooking, while running, while talking on the phone to her mother, and is working on a solution to reading while asleep. Her own favorite sonnet is by Hayden Carruth.

Check out Jenny’s blog Shelf Love.

Thanks to serifofnottingblog for the Shakespeare art up top.

  1. What about an alumni version? We would settle for bragging rights (or I am sure I could scrounge up a sweatshirt). 😉
